DIY Hair Styling: How to Get Professional Results at Home

Have you ever wanted an absolutely gorgeous hair style without having to leave home?  Say less..

Before diving into the realm of hair styling, proper hair prep is key.

On dry hair, start by applying a spray on heat protectant & blow dry that in.

Then go through every other section with a medium hold hair spray from roots to mid lengths (we are drying the hair out with product & the ends are usually the most dry section of the hair so they shouldn’t need much, if any hair spray)

Be sure to hold the can at least a can’s length away from the hair when spraying as to not make the hair “wet” with your hair spray.  

Allow the hair to set for a minute or two, then brush through.  

Hair sprays have alcohol in them so not only are we adding hold to the hair but we are essentially “drying out” the hair because the more dry the hair is, the better it will hold a curl, stay voluminous & perform well for you.

Now that your hair is prepped and primed, it's time to get down to business with heat styling.

For straight styles, reach for a high-quality flat iron with adjustable heat settings.

Be sure to apply a shine spray or a light gloss before using a flat iron on hair that has been prepped with hair spray or dry texture spray.

This will help the iron avoid drag & we definitely want to keep the iron moving to avoid heat damage and uneven results.

If curls are more your style, a curling wand or iron is your new best friend. (I usually prefer a 19mm or 25mm wand & I love the Sedu wands!)

Section your hair and wrap small sections around the barrel, holding for a few seconds before releasing.

Clip the curl into place & allow to cool for ten minutes if your hair tends to not hold a curl well.

Also, if your hair has trouble holding a curl, I recommend using a smaller barrel iron to create a tighter curl - this will allow for the curl to fall out slower throughout the course of the day.

For natural-looking waves, alternate the direction of each curl and leave the ends out for a relaxed vibe.

Finishing Touches and Products

With your masterpiece nearly complete, it's time for the final flourishes!

A medium, fine mist hairspray will help lock in your style without weighing down your strands.

For an extra boost of volume and texture, reach for a volumizing powder or texturizing spray.

These magical potions can add even more oomph, giving you that coveted lived-in look without the need for excessive teasing or backcombing.
